The Walled Wife

I was given a free ebook of this title in exchange for an honest review. I’ve never encountered Davis’ work in the past, however from the first poem I was floored. Davis’ experimental form is absolutely stunning and I am eager to grab a print of this book. The work as a whole is truly an art. The aesthetics of each poem matches the anguish of the words and together form a collection of work that will truly engulf the reader.

We are presented with sacrifice. We are walking through the voices of several women who share similar struggles; the book is a reminder that we as a society are still blinded with the dream of progression. The Walled Wife is a ceremonial burial. It is a brutal ritual that is continual, and this book mirrors it with the stories shared in the poems.

“learn to ignore the wife’s screams, same

As they seldom notice a bird’s singing”

These two lines sum up the collection quite well. They catch you off guard, much like the whole collection. It’s not something you’re prepared for, but you’re drawn into it because there’s warmth inside the ugliness. This is one of the realest collections I have encountered, and a book that should be read.

This book can be purchased through Amazon.
